What Is At Stake?
Superspeedways usually offer the best chance for an upset. Drivers who don’t figure among the favorites see this race as their best shot at landing a place in the playoffs.
Recent adjustments to the bump-draft rules have made the race marginally less unpredictable in the past several decades. Last fall’s race become a fuel-saving end – an almost unthinkable scenario in the past because of the high number of warnings over the course of the event.
This doesn’t indicate that Talladega has dropped its unpredictability element. The threat of a big-one might turn things around in an instant.
The Way To Win The 2019 GEICO 500
Brad Keselowski’s first Cup series win came at the trail back in 2009 after one of the most memorable finishes in NASCAR history. The 2012 champion went on to add three more victories at the trail, moving into fourth place one of the all-time winners at Talladega. Perhaps the very best superspeedway specialist within the specialty, Keselowski is a master of the draft technique, which constantly provides him an edge, particularly during the closing stages of the race.
Teammate Joey Logano is a close second. Logano has three wins within the last four years at the track, which means that Penske Racing has won all but two races at Talladega during that period. His win at the GEICO 500 this past year finally qualified the #22 for the playoffs on the way into the 2018 championship. Given Ford’s current dominance at the monitor, it could very well come down to a duel between Keselowski and Logano.
Denny Hamlin just has one win at Talladega to his title, but this does not signify that the Joe Gibbs Racing driver is not a strong competitor. The reigning Daytona 500 winner has three consecutive top 10 finishes and two top five . His record in the fantastic American Race also needs to be taken into account, as the two superspeedways share some similar traits. Hamlin has a remarkable six top five finishes (including two wins) within the previous eight Daytona 500, which makes him one of the favorites for Talladega.
