What’s expensive is intercity traveling, as transportation can run a bit more expensive at $20+ for 8-hour buses and upwards from there. China is a huge country and therefore, moving around quickly and on higher classes of train can add up quickly. If you pick a province and spend a longer time in it, this will not be a problem.
When I’m traveling independently, I find it hard to meet travelers who are in pairs or groups, but other solo travelers are easier. However, on tours, you’re all together for awhile, so the couples/pairs are more willing to talk to other travelers. But the biggest thing is to just give yourself a little push to approach people.
While getting around within a city is cheap, intercity traveling in Mexico can be costly, mainly because of how big the country is. The best case scenario is to rent a car, which costs about $30 – $50 per day, and split between 4 people. If you are backpacking Mexico solo, try to stay in the same place for a longer time to stretch the transportation costs out. That way, you are able to travel deeper and experience authentic Mexico, too. Aside from traveling with a multi-day tour, I’ve found food tours to be good.
You have to go into it with the idea that you’re not trying to meet your next best friend, you’re just looking for some friendly conversation here and there. Unfortunately it does often mean pushing yourself to be a little more outgoing than you might normally be, like approaching other travelers instead of waiting for people to approach you. Look around for other solo travelers, they are most likely to want to meet new people. But if you’re on a tour, it should actually be easier because you’ll be spending several days with the same people. Look for other solo travelers or just start talking to people you’re sitting near.
Remind yourself that you are ok being on your own sometimes, so it’s not like you NEED to have people around you all the time. And if the person you approach snubs you, well, you never have to see them again anyway. For sightseeing, you’ll get comfortable with that pretty quickly. Remember that most people are not paying attention to you, they’re paying attention to themselves.
No one cares if you’re taking a selfie by yourself, that’s what a selfie is for, right? I’ve taken tours by myself too, like food tours, and that’s usually fun because you meet other people on the tour.
I know there are people out there who say they aren’t interested in solo travel because they’d rather go with someone they know. There’s nothing wrong with preferring group travel – I like traveling with friends too. However, I do find myself cringing any time I hear someone cancels a trip because a friend couldn’t go. Even in major cities like Beijing and Shanghai, there are ways to cut your travel costs down. Hostels are a great value – perhaps the best in the world – and as always, if you stick to eating street food, you won’t need a lot of money to get by.
I completely understand about being an introvert, that’s me too. I think the difference between meeting people when you’re traveling and meeting people at home in your normal life is that you don’t have tons of time to get to know them.
That’s actually why food tours are good because they’re small groups so you’re almost guaranteed to have someone to talk to, even if you never see them again after the tour. And it’s a good way to get used to being on your own because you’re not with a friend or whoever, http://marketingfavorite.com/ but you’re still around other people for a few hours. Maybe find a tour or two for your first few days to get you started. I wouldn’t suggest one of those free walking tours though because they usually end up being big groups and you probably won’t get to talk to anyone.
They’re usually small groups, and there’s plenty of time when you’re eating and not necessarily listening to the guide, so you can chat with the other people on your tour. At the marketingfavorite.com very least, you have a few people to hang out with for a few hours, but if you really get along with someone, you could suggest meeting up the next day for a meal or an activity.
