“We’re still going to provide the services they need. They have no money for rent or food, but we are going to cover that for them.” The availability of these CCRI grants will serve as bridge funding to keep sober homes operational and prevent residents from being displaced.
Sober homes, also known as alcohol- and drug-free housing, can offer people new to recovery a safe and positive environment. These group living homes ensure that people in recovery are not isolated and can share their success and support with others reaching for the same goal. They are not treatment programs, but can be a lifesaver for people finishing inpatient or residential treatment without a healthy home environment to return to, or who want for their living situation to support their recovery. Sober houses offer an important service to individuals in early recovery.
Harbor House Sober Living strives to provide housing and rehabilitative support for men who are in recovery. Residents of sober homes pay affordable and simple all-inclusive rent payments on a weekly or monthly basis. Sober homes offer an opportunity for men and women in recovery to live together and support each other while pursuing a new life in recovery. We do not show halfway houses, treatment programs, or rehabilitation facilities. Having made a very solid beginning in their recovery, each guest has learned all of the tools necessary to stay sober. Now it is just a matter of living in a safe and supportive environment in which to practice the design for living.
These programs emphasize recovery and treatment within a structured setting. Residents are encouraged to integrate with the community and to access community resources. The emphasis of these programs is to assist residents to provide each other with a culture of recovery, support, sharing and positive role modeling. We were founded jointly by Vanderburgh House, an operator of sober houses in Massachusetts, and Vanderburgh Communities, an organization supporting sober living and recovery home operators.
But MASH Executive Director Larissa Matzek estimates her organization oversees only about one-third of the sober houses in the state. Others “don’t want to be above the radar because they may not want to be doing business the way they should be,” she said. To date, CCRI has awarded more than $11 million in grants for the creation or preservation Alcohol detoxification of nearly 2,400 units of substance-free housing, in 53 communities, serving recovery populations that include men, women, families, veterans, the homeless and ex-offenders. “We have to quarantine them and wait out the COVID-19 storm, but we are surprised at how well they are handling it and how resilient they are,” she said.
They visit detoxes and hospitals and share their experience and hope with others. They share at AA meetings what they have been doing in order to convey hope for others recovery. CCRI grant recipients must be 501c3 non-profit organizations and traditionally matching funds must be provided. All proposals and applicant qualifications are stringently reviewed and vetted by MassHousing. Most of the nearly 40 women in recovery living at Blake House https://phumyquocte.vn/symptom-stages-for-alcohol-withdrawal/ and Paul McDevitt House have lost their jobs and are likely not eligible for unemployment or federal COVID-19 benefits. Residents of sober homes often benefit from additional services, like counseling or day programs, as well as the support of group meetings.
The Bureau of Substance Addiction Services of the MA Department of Public Health is contracting with two organizations to apply national standards to these homes, made specific to include Massachusetts laws. These organizations – the Massachusetts Association for Sober Housing and the Recovery Homes Collaborative inspect and certify the homes, as well as provide training and technical assistance to sober housing operators seeking certification.
